Mega Raichu Y is an official Electric-type Mega Evolution of Raichu, introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Dimension expansion. It specialises in special attacks, with a base Special Attack of 160 and base Speed of 130. In Z-A, obtaining its required Mega Stone, Raichunite Y, involves completing Side Mission 139, The Dauntless Raichu Duo.
Although its appearance resembles Pikachu, this is a transformation of Raichu. It is also distinct from Mega Raichu X: both retain the Electric type, but their stat distributions favour different approaches to battle.
What Is Mega Raichu Y?
The Pokémon Company revealed Raichu’s two Mega Evolutions on September 12, 2025. Each uses a different Mega Stone, allowing the same species to take two distinct Mega-Evolved forms.
The Y form remains classified as the Mouse Pokémon. Its official height is 3 feet 3 inches, or 1 metre, and its weight is 57.3 pounds, or 26 kilograms.
Its design has an explanation within Pokémon’s fictional world. Electricity generated in its cheek pouches travels between its tail and the pointed fur on its head, becoming amplified along the way. The official description emphasises its ability to release that energy suddenly in powerful Electric-type attacks.
That energy also affects its temperament. It is described as combative and inclined towards direct attacks, with an emphasis on short, decisive encounters.
Mega Evolution itself is temporary. A Trainer’s Key Stone works with the Mega Stone held by a compatible Pokémon to trigger the transformation. The Pokémon changes appearance and gains power, but remains the same partner.
Base Stats and the Differences Between X and Y
The clearest distinction between Raichu’s two Mega forms appears in their base stats.

Base stats describe a Pokémon form’s underlying strengths. They are not the exact numbers every individual will display, since factors such as level and training affect its actual stats.
Both transformations raise Raichu’s base-stat total by 100 points. Their distribution is what matters.
The Y form gains most of its improvement in Special Attack, alongside increases in Attack and Speed. Its HP, Defense and Special Defense remain unchanged from standard Raichu.
The X form instead raises Attack, Defense and Special Defense. Its Special Attack and Speed remain at their standard values.
Consequently, the Y form’s stat spread supports special attacks, while X is better suited to physical attacks. The distinction is more useful than treating one as an automatic upgrade over the other: they have the same total, allocated differently.
How to Unlock Its Mega Stone in Legends: Z-A
The relevant adventure is Mega Dimension, the downloadable expansion for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Its additional story content takes place after completion of the main game’s story.
The expansion introduces spatial distortions around Lumiose City. These provide access to its additional encounters and missions, including the side mission associated with Raichu’s Mega Stones.
To obtain Raichunite Y:
- Complete Side Mission 2. This involves providing a Pikachu to an NPC.
- Complete Side Mission 108. This involves providing a Raichu to an NPC.
- Progress through Mega Dimension until the relevant Hyperspace side mission becomes available.
- Complete Side Mission 139, The Dauntless Raichu Duo.
- Give Raichunite Y to your Raichu as its held item.
The mission involves facing both Mega forms together. Completing it provides access to their respective Mega Stones, so the reward is not a permanent choice between X and Y.
If the mission is missing, check the two prerequisite side missions as well as your expansion progress. Completing the main story alone does not satisfy all the requirements.
The item name matters: Raichunite Y produces the Y transformation, while Raichunite X produces the X transformation.
Activating the Transformation
Equipping the stone prepares Raichu for Mega Evolution; it does not leave it permanently transformed.
In Z-A, Mega Evolution uses a gauge that fills during battle. Once the gauge is ready, the player can activate the transformation. When its energy runs out, the Pokémon returns to its normal form.
This makes activation timing part of using the form effectively. Obtaining the stone and managing the battle gauge are separate steps.
Type, Weaknesses and Battle Limitations
Mega Raichu Y is pure Electric, with no secondary type. Its type-based defensive matchups are straightforward:

Ground is therefore its sole type weakness. Its appearance does not give it Flying typing or remove that vulnerability.
Its defensive stats also deserve attention. The transformation substantially improves offensive potential, but leaves base HP at 60 and Defense at 55. The higher base-stat total does not represent an across-the-board increase in durability.
For Z-A movesets, Nintendo Everything’s guide recommends special options including Thunderbolt and Surf, with Dazzling Gleam or Focus Blast among the coverage choices. It also identifies Nasty Plot as a setup option.
These recommendations match the form’s emphasis on Special Attack. They should still be understood as choices for Z-A, since battle systems and available moves differ between Pokémon games.
Its Ability in Pokémon Champions
In Pokémon Champions, the Y form has No Guard. This Ability makes accuracy checks succeed for moves used by the Pokémon and moves directed at it.
The effect works both ways. It improves the reliability of its own attacks while also making opposing attacks more reliable against it. It should not be interpreted as protection from damage.
Champions also had a promotion distributing Raichu, Raichunite X and Raichunite Y through the in-game mailbox. The official availability window ran from June 17, 2026, at 02:00 UTC until September 2, 2026, at 01:59 UTC.
That particular giveaway has ended. Instructions describing it as an active way to claim the Pokémon and stones are therefore outdated as of September 29, 2026. It was a separate distribution from the side-mission unlock in Legends: Z-A.
